Sony Xperia Z5 Premium – Bend Test, Scratch Test, Burn Test – Durability

Welcome again to the Jerryrigeverything durability circus! In this ring, we have the highly requested Xperia Z5 Premium by Sony! Step right up to see how one of the only 4k 5.5 inch screens on the market holds up to scratches dealt by special picks made to assess the hardness of the phone’s screen according to Moh’s scale of hardness. Lean in closer to watch this waterproof Sony burn. Hold your breath as we bend this premium phone to it’s farthest limits. Do you want more than letters racing through your mind? Before we begin, as always, please remember that there is more than durability to take into account when making a smartphone purchase. Also, I always keep my phones in cases and cover screens with screen protectors for safe keeping, even if they pass these tests.

Starting out the festivities is a scratch test. Moh’s Scale of Hardness goes from one to ten with one, the softest material, being equivalent to Talc powder and ten, the hardest, being as hard as a diamond. The Xperia Z5 Premium has not been said by Sony to contain Gorilla Glass for its screen, but it still scores the same as this brand on the scratch test. The Xperia Z5 Premium is scratched by a level 6 pick with a level 7 leaving a deeper groove in the screen. The camera’s lens is made of plastic which means that it scratches very easily, so easy that the level 3 pick leaves a mark. It seems to be very similar to the camera lens of the Blackberry Priv. This easily damaged lens sits flush against the phone, so it can get scratched easily if it were set down in a hazardous environment because the lip around the lens is not high at all. The back of the phone receives no scratches from a metal razor, but it holds fingerprints easily. The metal sides of the phone get scratched a bit by a razor blade and keys.

Continuing the games is the burn test. The 4k IPS LCD display reacts quickly to the flame by turning off and going black. Unfortunately, after going black the pixels burn and turn white at the center of the site of the burn, but heat leaves the phone fairly quickly; the Xperia Z5 Premium is cool enough to touch within seconds. Past tests have taught us that black pixels recover while white pixels do not. The Xperia Z5 Premium has a combination of both.

Finally, the great bend! An initial bend snaps the sidebar next to the power button, a theme we have seen with bendable phones. The power button seems to be a weak spot for bendable phones. Bending it the other way breaks the bars next to the SIM card slot. Although it is rather bent, the phone is completely functional afterwards, but it is indeed broken.  A stronger frame and a higher quality, and less flush, lens would improve this phone, but it mostly passes the durability test.
